A case series on laparoscopic management of complex ovarian cysts
Abstract
Introduction: Complex ovarian cysts pose diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, often necessitating surgical intervention. Laparoscopic surgery has emerged as the preferred approach for managing these cysts, offering advantages such as minimal invasiveness, reduced postoperative pain, and faster recovery.
Here, this case series presents 10 such cases managed with laparoscopy.
Benefits of Laparoscopic Management:
Minimally Invasive Approach: Smaller incisions lead to reduced postoperative pain and quicker recovery.
Shorter Hospital Stay: Most patients are discharged within 24 hours, reducing healthcare costs.
Lower Risk of Adhesion Formation: Compared to open surgery, laparoscopy reduces tissue trauma and adhesion-related complications.
Enhanced Fertility Preservation: Precise dissection allows for ovarian tissue conservation, benefiting younger patients.
Improved Cosmetic Outcomes: Smaller scars result in better patient satisfaction.
Challenges and Limitations:
Risk of Cyst Rupture and Spillage: Inadvertent rupture can lead to peritoneal spread in malignant cases.
Technical Expertise Required: Laparoscopic cystectomy demands skilled surgeons to avoid excessive ovarian damage.
Potential for Recurrence: Incomplete excision can lead to cyst recurrence, necessitating long-term follow-up.
Malignancy Risk: If malignancy is suspected intraoperatively, conversion to laparotomy may be necessary for optimal staging and management.
Conclusion:
Laparoscopic management of complex ovarian cysts is a safe and effective approach, offering numerous advantages over traditional open surgery. It ensures precise excision while minimizing complications, promoting faster recovery, and preserving ovarian function. However, careful patient selection, preoperative evaluation, and surgical expertise are crucial for optimal outcomes. As minimally invasive techniques continue to evolve, laparoscopy remains the gold standard for managing complex ovarian cysts in appropriately selected patients.
