Quality improvement project on timings of category 1 and 2 caesarean sections in University Hospital of North Tees between 1st August 2024 till 31st July 2025
Abstract
Aim: To audit the timings of category 1and 2 caesarean sections over 6 months ,assess compliance with 30min and 75min decision to delivery interval standard ,and implement improvements.Reaudit was performed in subsequent 6 months to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions
Method: Data was collected from badgernet maternity record retrospectively over 6 months.Key parameters include decision to incision time, decision to delivery time ,indication for caesarean section.Following presentation of initial results targeted changes were implemented.Reaudit using same methodology was conducted over next 6 months
Result: In the initial audit 70% of category 1 caesarean sections met the 30min DDI standard . 75%of category 2 caesarean sections met 75min DDI standard.Common delays include the theatre availability, anasethetic delay, staff mobilisation, operative difficulties, other clinical priorities. After interventions ,the reaudit demonstrated improvement with 77 %of cases amongst category 1 achieving the target DDI.81%cases of category 2 achieved DDI standard.Notable reductions were observed in theatre transfer delays and anaesthetic times
Conclusion: The audit identified key barriers to achieving the 30min and 75min standard for category 1 and 2 caesarean sections .Implementation of targeted measures improved compliance and patient safety outcomes in reaudit cycle.Ongoing monitoring and multidisciplinary training are recommended to sustain progress
